Yellowstone River flooded

Did you know that at the moment the Yellowstone river is flooded? while you think about it do you have any questions such as why did it flood, When was the last flood and does this flood effect the environment. Today I will be answering all of those questions. The Yellowstone river flooded because of the warm weather recently which melted the snow on the mountains a lot quicker than usual.

before and after flood

The flood actually looks like it made surrounding plants more green . The last flood was march 27 2019. If you have any other questions ask me in the comments.

music in the mountains

Music in the Mountains is in a field.  The people  who perform are usually  from a different state. There are food stands. there are arts and crafts to. you can get a balloon sculpture also. its grate to be at music  in the mountains!

Mom says…

Music in the Mountains is a free outdoor concert series that runs all summer in Big Sky, about 40 minutes from Bozeman.  Food trucks arrive around 6, and the music starts at 7.  We love Music in the Mountains, we usually hit Ousel Falls before it starts, and then get a spot right near the front of the stage.  We bring a blanket, but many people bring beach chairs.

Crowds aren’t bad at all, and this event is family friendly for sure, though not dog friendly.  The 4th of July weekend is a little more crowded, as are any weekends that have other events.  But usually the crowds aren’t bad at all.

Parking can be a little tricky, try not to use up business parking. There is a parking lot both behind the stage, and another one behind the shopping center directly across from the stage.

The food is really good, with everything from Thai to cookies to pizza to margaritas last year!  You can bring in your own food as well.   I recommend bringing a soft frisbee, football, or something else for kids to do while waiting for the music to start.

You’ll love watching the sun sink lower over the mountains as live music plays and your children boogie 🙂

Bridger Bowl

Bridger Bowl

Bridger Bowl is a very busy place in Bozeman.  There are a bunch of runs to ski in Bridger Bowl.  There’s also people who teach you. You can rent ski equipment.

For skiing, you need a pass for ski lifts.  Most of the jumps are hard, but there are easier ones that are just a few inches tall.  Snowflake is the easiest but people put obstacles to try.

They have lessons to help you. When you sign in, if you’re doing lessons, you will get a ticket.  There will be a dot on it.  There will be a flags to go to the matching color of the dot.  Wait at the matching flag and give the ticket to the adult that is coming to you.

You can rent skis.  You don’t have to get ski sticks.  You also need to know your height and weight.

When you go to Bridger Bowl do your best!

Mom says…

Bridger Bowl is a great ski area.  It’s close enough to Bozeman that I can drop my kids off at school, ski from 9:30-2, and then be back to pick them up by 3.  In my opinion it’s better than Red Lodge, and it’s less overwhelming and less expensive for those who are beginners than Big Sky.

Bridger Bowl’s website can be confusing if you’re not used to it.  Here’s a run-down on what Bridger Bowl offers for kids:

  • Multi-week lessons are for locals that want their kids to ski every weekend.
  • Lesson packages are perfect for those visiting, sign up for 3 at a time and get a discount.
  • Learn to Ski (or snowboard) in 3 is a great deal for newbies!
  • Eagle Mount has an amazing ski program for children with disabilities.  It’s very affordable as well, and the volunteers and staff are fantastic. You sign up with Eagle Mount, not Bridger.

Gear!

If you’re coming in from out of town, you might wonder what the best gear is for skiing. Here is what we use.

  • Mittens are warmer than gloves.  We like these.
  • Wool ski socks stay put and keep feet warm, dry, and comfortable. Size up since they tend to run small or shrink.  We like these.
  • Wool base layer (long underwear) is the best, but there are great synthetic brands as well. We like these.
  • Layer!  I ski with a backpack and then collect what they don’t want, and re-distribute what they do. The sun coming out, wind picking up, or just getting warm from the exercise of skiing can make us be warm, cold, and then warm again within a few minutes.  We recommend a wool base layer (above), fleece coat, ski/snow pants, an extra puffy coat if it’s really cold, and then a shell with a hood.  Also a hat that covers the ears, ski goggles, and a baklava-type head covering if there is wind!
Tinted goggles help protect eyes from the bright sun reflecting off the snow, and a brightly colored hat, scarf, or coat makes kids easy to see on the ski hill.
  • Play it Again Sports offers season rentals for kids (adults too!) for a great price.
  • Round House Skis is just down the hill from Bridger Bowl (same parking lot) and they offer rentals for a little less than Bridger. I usually end up renting at Bridger since we’re buying a pass at the same time and the passes and rentals are in the same building, but if you’re renting for more than one person this is absolutely worth the extra stop.
  • They’ll give you a receipt with the details of your rental that has the specifications of your ski settings (Bridger or Round House)- save this so that renting goes faster the next time!
  • Yes, they need to wear a helmet!  Not only for safety, but it helps keep those hats on and heads warm as well.

More that you’ll want to know

  • Yes, you can park your kids in lessons and then go ski yourself. The teachers are excellent and the whole program is really well run.
  • There is play-care for the littles. This is a great program, I haven’t actually used it yet but I have seen the program and met the staff, and I would feel comfortable leaving my little one (and I’m super protective of my littles!). It’s not very crowded.  Buying the hourly pass to playcare is usually the best deal.
  • If you have a non-skier, the lodges are warm, friendly, and a great place to hang out.  One overlooks the beginner hill with a big beautiful window, great for parents who want to observe their new skiers who are in lessons.
  • If you are bringing a toddler along, or have a lot of gear and your children aren’t quite strong enough to help carry it yet, bring a sled! I tend to put my little in the sled, and then bring a backpack, piling gear on top of him as well.
  • If you have a little who isn’t old enough for lessons, but whats to be included, they will love little skis that strap on over snow boots.  We just use these near the lodges and lessons, there are lots of places to play in the snow at Bridger. It’s not too crowded at all, even on the weekends.

Lone Mountain Swimming and Gymnastics

Lone Mountain is a good work out. The X Class is basically Ninja Warrior. You can be a great swimmer. In the camps you do a bunch of games. Lone mountain is great!

Mom says…

Lone Mountain is the BEST place in Bozeman for the whole family to get lessons at once. Their staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgable and the kids all love their lessons and I love that they are learning skills and techniques while having tons of fun. With multiple abilities and ages of classes running at the same time, we enjoy all 3 kids getting activity at once while only having to go to one place.

Sam did 3 or 4 weeks of swimming lessons from Lone Mountain, coming into lessons with the ability to dog paddle and no fear of water, but no real stroke technique.  After lessons spread out over two summers (at age 6 and 7) he has progressed to have a nice freestyle!  Since I felt he now has a good grasp at swimming, I offered him the choice to swim more or to do the X Challenge (Ninja Warrior-like gymnastics for boys) and he chose the X Challenge, which he has loved!

I love X Challenge because it is all boys (let’s face it, boys can be rough and tumble and mixing girls into this dynamic doesn’t always work well) and the teachers are so encouraging while still correcting technique at the same time. He does X Challenge while our other two children are taking swim lessons, so we leave Lone Mountain, even on cold winter days, with three tired kids… I love that!

The saltwater pool is a warm for little ones, and great for sensitive skin.  Changing rooms accommodate opposite-sex children until age 4 (I believe) and are nice and clean, with child-sized amenities to help your little one change with ease.  Showers are out on the pool deck and the kids shower before entering the pool to keep it clean.

The swim lessons use games to encourage little ones to be comfortable in the water, while learning to put their face under, blow bubbles, and learn skills for swimming techniques.  Classes are a great length, with a change in activities every 5-10 minutes to keep their interest and practice a variety of skills.  Groups of lessons rotate around the pool, using platforms in the deep end, paddle boards, floating dumbbells, and more.

I’m really impressed with how everything flows with Lone Mountain, and how children are given lots of individual attention even in group lessons.

Special needs notes: One of my favorite things about LM is that they are accommodating my daughter! Eagle Mount also offers great swimming lessons for children with disabilities, but driving kids to two different places at two different times got old, especially when the roads are icy. LM staff directed me to the head of the swim program and we discussed her abilities and limitations, and they answered all my questions about the lessons. I was told that as long as she could wait her turn on the wall, they could accommodate her in group lessons.

They provide her with more time to respond, and visual instruction if she doesn’t understand the verbal instruction. I’m really happy with this solution. I understand that not all programs are going to be able to accommodate special needs due to both the nature of different disabilities and the nature of different classes, but I’m VERY thankful that Lone Mountain is able to have Hannah in their classes at the same time her brothers are in classes there.

Some tips:

  • The pool area is crazy warm. This is great for keeping the little little swimmers comfortable, but for parents- be sure to dress in layers!  Parents are encouraged to stay with their swimmers in case they need a trip to the bathroom.
  •  Since it’s so warm in the pool area, we don’t do swimming lessons during the summertime, but in the winder it’s a welcome break from the cold!
  • For activity and swimming lessons without having to melt by the pool, the camps offered also contain daily swimming lessons along with other daily activities.  The camps have been a hit for Sam!
  • The little swimmers (age 3-5) classes fill up really fast since there is a low child to teacher ratio.  If you need this class, need weekends, or need 2 or more children in lessons at the same time make sure you’re on their email list and set your alarm to register as SOON as they open registration (usually in July for the school year classes).  Some classes fill up within minutes.
